The lasting effects of hurricane Sandy are more than just the physical damage it caused - the economic hardship it created for so many northeasterners. In the case of the beachside fun park, Bayview Fun Park, they lost their bumper boat attraction. Though the buildings and structures were covered, the in-ground pool was not. The damage from the storm was so extensive that the pool could not be recovered without a massive cash outlay - something a recovering business could not put out.

Harry Trefes called us and asked, is it possible to use one of our pools instead. And we said “Absolutely!” We were so excited about being a part of a Sandy recovery story that we made him a great deal and they got their number one attraction back up and running in now time.

Hi Simon,

It was a pleasure speaking with you yesterday.  You provided some very useful information and I'm excited that a pool that you offer may work to suit our needs.

Misquamicut Beach located in the town of Westerly, RI is a small seaside community that comes alive with tourism during the summer season.  The entire town's business community depends on the beach and the tourism it attractions.  Hurricanes are not uncommon to us but Sandy has been the worse storm to hit our community since 1954.  Just about every business located at the beach was significantly impacted.  It has been an on going battle for many businesses to rebuild and recover from the storm and there are many businesses who will not be ready to open for this up coming season or will be different from what they were before the storm.

For my business, Bayview Fun Park, we suffered storm damage just like everyone else.  The difference for us is; since we are "outdoor entertainment" we cannot get flood insurance to cover our attractions.  Only buildings and contents is covered under the National Flood Insurance program.  One of our attractions is bumper boats.  Of all of our attractions, this one was most impacted and damaged.  We had a 38' by 42' in ground pool where the 6 bumper boats operated (see "photos" from our website, www.bayviewfunpark.com).  The storm surge forced the ocean to over run the entire property where Bayview Fun Park is located.  The ocean brought literally, tons of sand, as much as 3 feet of sand, and buried the mini-golf course, go-kart track, collapsed 2 walls and filled the bumper boat pool.  The associated pool pump-house was completely destroyed as well.  It took 2 weeks use of heavy equipment to remove the sand from the attractions.  In the end, the pool was damaged beyond repair and we filled it in.

Now, the decision needs to be made if we want to rebuild the bumper boat attraction of just eliminate the attraction forever.  The decision has been made, due to cost, to not rebuild an in ground pool so now we need to look into other options if we want to keep bumper boats at Bayview Fun Park.  That is why I contacted you.  After speaking with you, I believe a portable pool is an option that fits within our budget and just may keep bumper boats at Bayview Fun Park.

Of course losing any attraction will impact the business financially.  Being able to fully recover from the storm is our first option but there are limits.  We have already spent thousands of dollars in getting the business ready to reopen but we have a ways to go.  We have been very fortunate that the beach businesses have received financial assistance from the community, vendors and other businesses that directly support and rely on the success of the businesses at the beach.  It is a tremendous and monumental task but we are determined to be up and operating to a level, if not greater than before the storm and we great appreciate all those who have helped and will help in us achieving our goal.

Again, I enjoyed speaking with yesterday and look forward to the package you will put together.

Sincerely,

Harry Trefes

The above picture is of their previous in-ground pool after Hurricane Sandy tore through the area. The cost to repair this was not covered in the insurance policy. IN the end, it was cheaper to cover it up and put an EZ Pool on top.
